This sequence is the absolute key to your digital assets; a screenshot or text file creates a catastrophic vulnerability. Losing these words equates to irrevocable loss of your holdings.

During installation, generate this phrase in a sterile environment. Disable network connections on your computer, ensure no background applications are recording your screen, and verify the extension's authenticity by checking the developer signature in your browser's store. A counterfeit application will drain your portfolio in moments.

Configure a strong, unique password for the local vault. This password encrypts the software's data on your machine, but remember: it cannot retrieve your secret phrase. Enable automatic lock timers measured in minutes, not hours. For significant sums, dedicate a machine that never executes unrelated software or browses the web.

Treat browser-based finance tools with operational skepticism. Regularly audit connected sites and revoke permissions for unused services. Your phrase restores holdings on any compatible software, but a leaked phrase transfers everything to an adversary. Physical backup and digital discretion are non-negotiable pillars for asset preservation.

Exodus Wallet Extension Setup, Recovery, and Security Guide

Immediately after installing the software, generate and securely store your 12-word secret phrase offline; this single action is the absolute cornerstone of asset protection, as these words are the only method to restore access to your funds on any compatible device if your browser data is lost.

Configure the in-app transaction signing preferences to require manual approval for every outgoing transfer, disable automatic connection requests from decentralized applications, and routinely use the built-in portfolio tracker to audit activity. Never share your secret phrase or enter it on any website–legitimate interfaces will only ever ask for a password to decrypt the locally stored data. For an additional layer, connect a hardware vault to the program to keep private keys permanently isolated from internet exposure, physically authorizing each operation.

Installing the Extension and Creating a New Wallet

Download the software exclusively from the official Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons portal.

After adding the program to your browser, launch it and select "Create New." The tool will immediately generate a unique 12-word secret phrase. This phrase is the master key to your funds; the software never stores it online. Write these words down with a pen on the provided paper backup sheet, maintaining the exact sequence.

Never store this phrase digitally–no screenshots, emails, or cloud documents.
Verify the written phrase twice for accuracy.
Keep the physical copy in a secure, private location, separate from your primary device.

You will then be asked to re-enter specific words from the list to confirm possession. Following this, establish a strong, unique local password to encrypt the vault's data on this specific machine.

Choose a password manager for this code if needed, but never for the 12-word phrase. The interface will then initialize, revealing your public deposit addresses. Fund any asset to activate the portfolio.

This entire process occurs locally on your computer. No personal information is transmitted to external servers during creation, granting you immediate sovereignty over your digital assets.

FAQ:
I installed the Exodus extension but my computer crashed. How do I recover my wallet on a new device?

You need your 12-word secret recovery phrase. This phrase is the only way to recover your wallet. On your new device, install the Exodus extension again. When you open it, select "I already have a wallet." You'll be prompted to enter your 12-word phrase in the exact order. Once entered, Exodus will restore all your assets and transaction history. Never enter this phrase on any website—only directly into the official Exodus extension.

Is the Exodus browser extension safe from hackers?

The extension's safety depends heavily on your own actions. Exodus itself doesn't hold your crypto; it provides access to your assets on the blockchain. Its code is open for review. The main risks are malware on your computer or user error. A keylogger could steal your password, and a phishing site could trick you into entering your recovery phrase. Always verify you're on the real Exodus site, use a strong, unique password, and never share your 12-word phrase. Keeping your operating system and antivirus updated is also necessary.

What happens if I forget my Exodus extension password?

Your password only secures the extension on that specific browser and device. If you forget it, you cannot reset it. You must uninstall the extension and then reinstall it. During the new setup, you will use your 12-word secret recovery phrase to restore your wallet. This process gives you access to your funds but will also delete your local transaction history and preferences. Your assets on the blockchain remain safe. This highlights why safeguarding your recovery phrase is more critical than remembering the local password.

Can I use the same Exodus wallet on the extension and my mobile phone?

Yes, you can access the same wallet from multiple devices. This is done by using your 12-word recovery phrase. Install the Exodus app on your phone and choose the option to restore an existing wallet. Enter the same 12 words you used for the browser extension. Both the extension and the mobile app will then show the same balances and allow you to manage the same assets. They are simply different windows into the same wallet. Any transaction you make on one will be reflected on the other.
