Avoid third-party links to eliminate any risk of installing a fraudulent application. Once installed, tap "Create a new wallet." The app will generate your unique 12-word recovery phrase–this is your wallet's master key.

Write each word down in the exact order presented on a physical piece of paper. Store this paper separately from your devices. Confirm you have saved it correctly by selecting the words in sequence when prompted. This phrase is the only way to restore your assets if your phone is lost or damaged; Coinbase cannot recover it for you.

With your wallet active, you can connect to decentralized applications. Visit a DApp's website in your mobile browser and look for a "Connect Wallet" button. Select Coinbase Wallet from the list; a deep link will open your app. Review the connection request carefully–it typically asks for permission to view your public address, not your private keys or funds. Approve the connection to start interacting.

Should you need a new device, recovery is straightforward. Install the wallet app again and choose "I already have a wallet." Enter your 12-word recovery phrase precisely, maintaining the original word order and spelling. Once verified, your complete wallet, including all assets and transaction history, will be restored. Regularly test this process with a small amount of crypto to ensure your backup is correct.

Downloading and Installing the Coinbase Wallet Application

Get the official Coinbase Wallet app only from your device's trusted source: the Apple App Store for iOS or the Google Play Store for Android. Avoid third-party websites to eliminate security risks.

Open your app store and search for "Coinbase Wallet." Verify the developer is listed as "Coinbase, Inc." before tapping install. The app is free to download and does not require a Coinbase exchange account to use.

Once installed, open the application. You will see two clear options: "Create a new wallet" or "I already have a wallet." Select "Create a new wallet" to begin the setup process on your device.

The app will then generate your unique 12-word recovery phrase, also known as a seed phrase. This phrase is the master key to your funds. Write each word down in the exact order presented on a physical piece of paper and store it securely. Do not save it digitally, email it, or take a screenshot.

After confirming you've saved the phrase, you will be asked to re-enter it. This step verifies your backup and ensures you can recover access if your phone is lost or damaged. Following this, you can set a secure biometric lock, like Face ID or Touch ID, for daily access to the app.

Creating a New Self-Custody Crypto Wallet

Download the Coinbase Wallet app directly from the official Google Play Store or Apple App Store to avoid fake applications. Never search for it via a web browser link sent to you.

Open the app and tap "Create a new wallet." The software will generate your unique set of recovery words, known as a Secret Recovery Phrase. This phrase is the absolute key to your funds.

Write down the 12-word phrase by hand on a physical piece of paper. Follow these rules:

Do not screenshot it.
Do not store it digitally (no email, cloud notes, or text files).
Double-check the order and spelling of each word.

After writing it down, you will be asked to confirm the phrase by selecting the words in the correct sequence. This step verifies your backup. Store your paper backup in a secure, private place, like a fireproof safe.

Next, establish a strong, unique passcode for the app itself. This passcode locks the wallet on your device, adding a daily-use security layer separate from your recovery phrase.

Your wallet is now active. Before transferring significant assets, practice the recovery process. Uninstall and reinstall the app, then choose "I already have a wallet." Enter your 12-word phrase precisely. Successfully accessing your empty wallet confirms your backup is correct.

Finally, fund your wallet. Tap the "Receive" button to find your public wallet address (starting with '0x...'). Copy this address and use it to send a small test amount from an exchange or another wallet. Confirm the transaction appears in your Coinbase Wallet's asset list.

Securely Storing Your Secret Recovery Phrase

Write your 12-word phrase on paper using a pen with permanent, fade-resistant ink. Avoid typing it on any device connected to the internet, including your phone, computer, or in an email draft.

Create multiple copies to protect against loss from fire or water. Store these copies in separate, secure physical locations, like a home safe and a safety deposit box.

Use a specialized metal backup tool designed for crypto phrases, which resists fire and corrosion.
Never laminate paper backups; heat during the process can damage the writing.
Keep your phrase completely separate from your wallet. Do not store them together.

Treat this phrase with more care than the password to your email or bank account. Anyone who finds these words can take control of your assets, and Coinbase cannot restore them for you.

For an added layer of security, consider splitting your phrase. You could store 8 words in one location and the remaining 4 in another, ensuring no single location holds the complete set. Just be certain you have a reliable system to reconstruct the full sequence.

Regularly check the condition of your paper backups. Every six months, verify that the words are still legible and that your storage locations remain secure and dry.

Adding Cryptocurrency to Your Account

Choose a cryptocurrency like Ethereum (ETH) to start, as it's required for most network transaction fees.

Tap the 'Buy' button within your Coinbase Wallet app. You'll see a list of supported assets; select the one you want.

Connect a payment method directly in the wallet interface. You can use a debit card, bank account, or existing crypto from another wallet.

Enter the amount you wish to purchase in your local currency. The app shows the equivalent crypto amount and any fees before you confirm.

Complete the purchase. The new cryptocurrency will appear in your wallet's asset list within a few minutes.

For receiving crypto from elsewhere, find your public wallet address. Tap the 'Receive' button on the asset's page and copy the address or scan the QR code.

Always double-check the network when receiving. Sending Bitcoin on the Ethereum network, for example, will result in lost funds.

Consider transferring assets from your main Coinbase exchange account for lower fees. Most dapps display a prominent "Connect Wallet" button on their main page.

Tap "Connect Wallet." A connection menu will typically list many wallet options. Select "[https://extension-web3.com/coinbase-wallet.php Coinbase Wallet extension] Wallet" from this list. If you're on a desktop, you will see a QR code appear on the screen.

On your mobile device, open the Coinbase Wallet app. Tap the scan icon, usually found in the top-right corner, and point your camera at the desktop's QR code. For mobile dapps, your Coinbase Wallet app should launch automatically or prompt you to approve the connection.

A detailed permission request will appear inside your wallet app. This screen shows exactly what the dapp is asking to access. Review these details carefully before approving.

Permission Type
What It Allows
Your Action

View Wallet Address
The dapp can see your public address and token balances.
Generally safe to approve.

Request Transactions
The dapp can suggest transactions for your signature.
Review every transaction's details before signing.

Request Token Approvals
The dapp can ask to spend specific tokens in your wallet.
Set spending limits and revoke unused approvals periodically.

After you confirm the connection in your wallet, the dapp's interface will refresh. If a transaction seems incorrect, reject it immediately.

To disconnect, find the dapp's interface section showing your address. Often, a "Disconnect" or "Log Out" option is available there. You can also manage connections directly in your Coinbase Wallet app's settings under "Connected Apps" to revoke access.

Approving Transactions and Managing Permissions

Always read the transaction details on your wallet's screen before you approve. This pop-up shows the exact action, amount, network fee, and recipient address.

Check the requested spending cap when a dapp asks for token access. You can revoke this permission later in your wallet settings.

Manage all your active connections in the Coinbase Wallet app. Go to Settings > Connected Sites to see a list. Review this list monthly and disconnect from dapps you no longer use.

Pay close attention to the network specified. Confirm you are on Ethereum, Polygon, or the correct chain to avoid failed transactions and lost fees.

If a transaction seems suspicious, reject it immediately. Legitimate dapps will never ask for your secret recovery phrase via a transaction pop-up.

Adjust gas fees for speed and cost. When confirming, you can often choose between Slow, Average, or Fast priority. Use slower options for non-urgent actions to save money.

Restoring Your Account Using the Recovery Phrase

Open your Coinbase Wallet app and select "I already have a wallet" when prompted. Choose the option to restore using a recovery phrase.

Enter your 12-word phrase exactly as you wrote it down, with each word separated by a single space. Double-check for typos; the system is case-insensitive, but every word must be correct and in the precise order. If you recorded a 13th word for an extra security layer, include it now.

The app will process your phrase. This may take a moment as it rebuilds your wallet's cryptographic keys on the device. You are not re-downloading your assets; you are proving ownership of the blockchain addresses linked to that phrase.

Once restoration is complete, your wallet will display your previous balances and transaction history. Immediately verify that the public addresses shown match those from your old wallet. This confirms a successful recovery.

After access is regained, consider this a security reset. Review connected dApps in the wallet settings and revoke any permissions you no longer need. Set a new, strong password for the wallet app itself, as this is separate from your recovery phrase.

Store your recovery phrase again in a secure, offline location. Never type it into a website or share it with anyone claiming to be support.

FAQ:
I installed the Coinbase Wallet app. What's the first thing I should do before moving any crypto into it?

The absolute first step is to securely store your recovery phrase. After creating your wallet, the app will display 12 random words in a specific order. Write these words down on paper and store that paper in a safe place, like a lockbox. Do not save a screenshot, email it, or store it in a cloud note. This phrase is the only way to restore your wallet if you lose your phone or forget your password. Only after you have confirmed your recovery phrase is physically written down and stored safely should you proceed to fund your wallet.

How do I connect my Coinbase Wallet to a decentralized application (dapp) like Uniswap?

Connecting to a dapp is straightforward. First, open the dapp's website in your phone's web browser or find it within the Coinbase Wallet's browser section. Look for a "Connect Wallet" button on the dapp's site. When you tap it, a list of wallet options will appear. Select "Coinbase Wallet." This action will prompt your Coinbase Wallet app to open and ask for your permission to connect. You'll see the dapp's name and the type of access it's requesting. Review this and approve the connection. Once connected, you can use the dapp's features, and your wallet address will be used for transactions.

My phone was lost. How do I get my wallet and funds back using the recovery phrase?

To recover your wallet, install the Coinbase Wallet app on your new device. On the welcome screen, choose the option to "I already have a wallet" or "Restore." You will be asked to enter your 12-word recovery phrase. Type the words exactly as you wrote them, in the correct order, with a single space between each word. The app will then rebuild your wallet. This process can take a few moments. Once complete, all your assets, collectibles, and transaction history linked to that seed phrase will appear. Your funds are on the blockchain, not the phone, so recovery is possible from any device with the correct phrase.

Is there a difference between the Coinbase Wallet and my regular Coinbase exchange account?

Yes, they are separate products with different purposes. Your Coinbase exchange account is a custodial account where Coinbase holds your crypto keys for you, similar to a bank. The Coinbase Wallet is a self-custody wallet where you alone control your private keys and recovery phrase. They are not automatically linked. While you can transfer funds between them, your Wallet's security is your responsibility. The Wallet allows direct interaction with dapps, DeFi protocols, and NFTs, which the standard exchange interface does not support. Think of the exchange as a trading platform and the Wallet as your personal crypto vault and access tool for the wider decentralized web.
